Garden of Eden

National Register Of Historic Places · Lucas, Kansas

A Civil War veteran and Populist named Samuel Perry Dinsmoor spent from 1907 to 1932 building a house of limestone cut to look like log timbers, then surrounded it with a hundred and thirteen tons of concrete sculpture — Adam and Eve, the all-seeing eye, and a tableau of Labor crucified by the Doctor, the Lawyer, the Preacher and the Banker. He is still on the property, in a mausoleum he built himself, under a glass lid. It is the founding monument of Kansas grassroots art and there is nothing else like it.

305 East Second Street, Lucas, Kansas, 67648, United States

Open for guided tours with seasonal hours — longest April to October, short or by appointment in winter. Modest admission; the tour is the only access to the house and mausoleum. Check before driving out; Lucas is small and remote.
