Garden of the Gods Recreation Area

Rock Formation · Herod, Illinois

A ridge of weathered sandstone in the Shawnee National Forest, in the far south-east of Illinois, where three-hundred-and-twenty-million-year-old rock has eroded into shapes with names — Camel Rock, Monkey Face, the Devil's Smokestack, Anvil Rock. A quarter-mile flagstone loop takes you along the top of it, and the Forest Service calls it one of the most photographed locations in the state, which is very likely true.

Karbers Ridge Road, Herod, Illinois, 62947, United States

Open daily, year-round, free. Campground on site with a modest fee; water shut off in winter. Check the forest-wide fire danger rating in dry spells.
