Gardens of Babur (Bagh-e Babur)

Mughal Garden · Kabul, Kabul

Eleven hectares of terraced Mughal garden climbing a Kabul hillside, laid out around 1528 by Babur, founder of the Mughal empire, who loved the spot enough to be buried here beneath the open sky. The Aga Khan Trust rebuilt the terraces, watercourses, caravanserai and Shah Jahan's white marble mosque between 2002 and 2008, and the garden returned to being Kabul's great public breathing space. Since November 2022 the authorities have barred Afghan women from Kabul's parks, which includes this one; access for foreign women is unverified.
