⚠ THE HOUSE WHERE THE LIBERATOR OF ITALY LIVED IN EXILE WITH THE MAN MANY ITALIANS CREDIT WITH INVENTING THE TELEPHONE. ⚠ GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI SHELTERED HERE IN THE 1850s with ANTONIO MEUCCI, whose 'teletrofono' predated Bell's patent — ⚠ AND THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PASSED A RESOLUTION IN 2002 RECOGNISING MEUCCI'S WORK.
420 Tompkins Avenue, Staten Island, New York, 10305, United States
⚠ RING BEFORE YOU TRAVEL — this is a small, volunteer-supported museum with NARROW HOURS, and published times are not always the operating times. That is the single most important practical fact about visiting. ⚠ IT IS FORTY-FIVE MINUTES AND THAT IS HONEST: do not make the journey for this alone. FORT WADSWORTH is ten minutes south and FREE, and the ALICE AUSTEN HOUSE is ten minutes north — both are in this database and the three make a good eastern-shore afternoon reachable from Manhattan on the free ferry plus a bus. ⚠ GET THE MEUCCI CLAIM RIGHT: he filed a patent CAVEAT rather than a full patent and could not afford to renew it, and the 2002 U.S. House resolution recognising his work is a CONGRESSIONAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, NOT A LEGAL REVERSAL of Bell's patent. ⚠ Admission is modest or donation-based. Parking is on-street in a residential neighbourhood. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED.
