Garnet Ghost Town
Heritage Village · Drummond, Montana
A gold camp at six thousand feet in the Garnet Range east of Missoula, reached by eleven miles of steep gravel that the Bureau of Land Management closes to vehicles for four months every winter. About thirty buildings survive in a wooded hollow — a hotel, a saloon, a store, miners' cabins — abandoned in stages between the 1910s and the 1940s and never restored. It is smaller than Bannack and considerably harder to reach, which is exactly why the people who make the drive tend to have the place to themselves.
Garnet Range Road, Drummond, Montana, 59832, United States
Strongly seasonal, and the road decides it. The Garnet Range Road is ELEVEN MILES OF STEEP GRAVEL and is CLOSED TO VEHICLES FROM 1 JANUARY TO 30 APRIL, when the town is reachable only by ski or snowmobile. The visitor centre keeps seasonal hours, generally daily in summer and reduced in spring and autumn; a modest BLM day-use fee applies. Two cabins in the town are rented in winter only, booked through recreation.gov. There is no food or fuel on site or nearby.
