Gathering Place
Privately Funded Public Park Given To Tulsa; Opened 2018 · Tulsa, Oklahoma
A 66-acre riverside park in Tulsa, given to the city by the George Kaiser Family Foundation and opened in 2018 at a cost of about $465 million, the largest private gift to a public park in American history. It is free, and it is built for play rather than for looking at: Chapman Adventure Playground has towers, slides and rope bridges shaped like herons and water creatures, Charlie's Water Mountain lets children climb a fountain, and the Skate Park, basketball courts, sports fields and Boathouse on the Arkansas River all cost nothing to use. Peggy's Pond has paddle boats, the Lodge and ONEOK Boathouse hold cafés and event rooms, and a land bridge carries the whole park over Riverside Drive so families never cross traffic. Concerts, films and festivals run through the year on the Chapman Green lawn and at the Williams Lodge.
