Gatineau Park

Gatineau Park (National Capital Commission) · Chelsea, Quebec

Gatineau Park is a large protected area of forest, lakes and ridges in the Outaouais region of Quebec, about 20 minutes by car from downtown Ottawa and run by the National Capital Commission. It is the capital region's everyday outdoor space, used for hiking, cycling, swimming, skiing and scenic drives. The best-known stops are the Champlain Lookout over the Ottawa Valley, Pink Lake, a meromictic lake whose deep layers do not mix with the surface, and the Mackenzie King Estate with its gardens and the Moorside tea room (seasonal, confirm). In winter it has an extensive network of cross-country ski trails. It suits families, cyclists, walkers and ski fans who want nature near a city. It is also busy on sunny weekends and in autumn colour season, so expect full parking lots and possible fees, and it is large, so pick one sector and do it well. Confirm road closures, passes and trail conditions before you go.

The park is open all year, but access depends on season. Parkways and many facilities, including the Mackenzie King Estate grounds and the Moorside tea room, are seasonal and run on set hours that change by year, so confirm before you go. On summer weekends some parkway sections are closed to cars so cyclists and walkers can use them - confirm which days and stretches. Parking fees or permits apply at some lots, and winter trail passes are needed for skiing. Gates and washrooms may close early or for the season. In autumn, expect crowd controls on the busiest weekends. Always check the NCC for current conditions, closures, fire restrictions and trail grooming reports.
