Gatlinburg
Resort Area · Gatlinburg, Tennessee
A resort town of a few thousand permanent residents wedged into a narrow valley at the main entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which several million people a year pass through and a great many of them treat as the destination rather than the gateway. The Parkway through the middle is a mile of pancake houses, moonshine tasting rooms, mini-golf and attractions; behind it are a chairlift, an aerial tramway to a small ski area, a suspension bridge over the valley and an eight-mile loop of independent craft workshops that is far quieter and considerably better.
