Gavno Castle

Rococo Manor On An Island Reached By Causeway, Known For Its Spring Tulip Displays, A Large Private Painting Collection And Parkland · Naestved, Region Zealand

Gavno Castle, Gavno Slot in Danish, is a pink-and-white Rococo manor on a small island in Karrebaek Fjord, roughly 5 km south of Naestved in south Zealand and about 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Copenhagen. The island is reached by a low causeway. A convent of Dominican nuns stood here from the early 1400s; after the Reformation the estate passed to the nobility, and in the 1750s the statesman Otto Thott rebuilt it in the Rococo style and filled it with books and paintings. His painting collection, still hanging in the house, is often described as one of the largest private collections in Scandinavia, and the old convent chapel survives inside the main building. The Reedtz-Thott family still own it. Most visitors come in spring, when the park is planted with a very large tulip display, and families come in summer for the park, playground and cafe. The honest caveat: it is seasonal, roughly late April to late summer, it is a regional outing rather than a national sight, and without the tulips it is a pleasant manor park, not a must.

Seasonal: usually open daily from roughly mid or late April, when the tulips start, through the summer holiday to about late August or early September, and closed the rest of the year - confirm the current season dates, which shift each year with the weather and the tulip timing, and confirm the daily hours, usually a daytime pattern of late morning to late afternoon. The house interior may open on a shorter timetable than the park. By car from Copenhagen take the E47/E55 south, then route 54 to Naestved and follow signs to Gavno, roughly 90 km. By train, Copenhagen to Naestved takes roughly 1 hour; from Naestved station a taxi takes about 10-15 minutes, as buses to the island are few or absent - check Rejseplanen. Tickets are sold at the gate and often online; no timed booking as a rule.
