Gaziantep Castle
A Fortress At The Heart Of A Food Capital, Rebuilt By The Ottomans On Roman And Byzantine Foundations, With A Museum Telling The Story Of The 1920 21 Defence Of The City, Tunnels, Towers And Views Over The Old Town. A Short Stop That Pairs With The Baklava Shops, The Bazaar And The Zeugma Museum · Sahinbey, Gaziantep
Gaziantep Castle stands on a rounded hill in the middle of the city, close to the old coppersmiths bazaar, and is the visual centre of a place often described as the food capital of Turkiye. The first fortification is thought to date from Roman or even earlier times, and later rulers, including the Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans, rebuilt and strengthened it into a ring of round towers and thick walls around a dry moat (confirm the layers). Inside the walls, a museum tells the story of the 1920-21 defence of the city against occupying forces, with displays, figures and vaulted rooms in the old garrison halls (confirm). The castle was damaged in the earthquakes of 2023 and has been under restoration, so what you can enter depends on the work in progress (confirm). The view from the ramparts takes in domes, minarets and the dense tangle of the old town. It is a short, absorbing visit that fits well with a morning of bazaars, baklava and kebab before a trip to the Zeugma Museum.

The castle and its museum are normally open daily except Monday, from about 09:00 to 17:00 or 18:00, with a lunch pause in some seasons and shorter days in winter - confirm with the museum authority, as restoration after the 2023 earthquakes may limit opening. The last entry is usually about 30 minutes before closing. The coppersmiths bazaar below operates on a normal market schedule, mostly from about 09:00 to 19:00 and with some shops closed on Sunday (confirm). Food shops and baklava houses open early and many close in the early evening, so plan the day with the food stops in mind. Friday midday prayer time can quieten the old town.
