Gazur Gah (Shrine of Khwaja Abdullah Ansari)
Shrine · Herat, Herat
Herat's most venerated shrine: the tomb of the 11th-century Sufi saint and poet Khwaja Abdullah Ansari, the "Pir of Herat", rebuilt in the 1420s under the Timurid ruler Shah Rukh into a walled funerary complex a few kilometres east of the city. Behind its towering iwan portal lie courtyards of carved marble headstones — centuries of Herat's dead crowding toward the saint — glazed Timurid tilework, ancient ilex trees, and an active devotional life that has never stopped. Rulers down to Amir Dost Mohammad Khan chose burial here. It is the fourth pillar of Herat's heritage alongside the Citadel, the Great Mosque and the Musalla.
