Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site

Historic House · Rome City, Indiana

The cabin home of Gene Stratton-Porter — novelist, nature photographer and one of the best-selling American authors of the early twentieth century — on Sylvan Lake at Rome City, built in 1914 after the draining of the Limberlost swamp destroyed the wetland her earlier books were written about. The Cabin in Wildflower Woods stands in twenty acres of gardens and woodland she planted herself, and she is buried on the property. Her novel A Girl of the Limberlost sold in the millions and was filmed repeatedly.

1205 Pleasant Point, Rome City, Indiana, 46784, United States

Open on a limited seasonal state historic site schedule, generally Tuesday to Saturday in the warmer months with reduced or no winter operation. The cabin is seen by guided tour; grounds and gardens are self-guided. NOTE this is the Rome City site, not the separate Limberlost site at Geneva.
