Geneva sits at the south-western tip of Lake Geneva, French-speaking and international, home to the UN in Europe and the Red Cross. Its emblem is the Jet d'Eau, a fountain that shoots about 140 m into the air from the end of a pier, pumping around 500 litres a second at roughly 200 km an hour. It is free to see and runs most of the year, except in high wind or frost. Behind the lake rises the Old Town, Vieille Ville, where the Reformation took hold under Calvin. You can climb the tower of St Pierre Cathedral, walk the Place du Bourg-de-Four, and see the Reformation Wall in Parc des Bastions. The honest picture is a small, clean, quiet and very expensive city. The Jet d'Eau is a photo stop, restaurants and watch shops are priced steeply, and two days is plenty. Winter brings the cold bise wind and lake fog, while summer is warm and good for swimming. Plan around the weather, and book the UN tour well ahead if you want to go inside the Palais des Nations at all, since the tour needs ID , a passport and a booking.
