Genghis Khan Mausoleum

Mongolian Memorial Mausoleum Of Genghis Khan In Ordos; National 5A Tourist Attraction · Ordos, Inner Mongolia

A great memorial complex on the Ordos grasslands of Inner Mongolia, built around the cult of Genghis Khan, the conqueror who united the Mongol tribes and founded an empire that reached from Korea to Hungary. It is not a tomb: Genghis died in 1227 and was buried in secret, his grave deliberately hidden and never found, so what is honoured here are relics and a spirit shrine that the Darkhad, hereditary guardians descended from his household, carried across the steppe for centuries before the present buildings were raised in the 1950s. Three linked halls under golden domes shaped like Mongol tents stand at the top of a long ceremonial stairway, holding silver caskets, portraits and a famous sword; around them spread a museum, an enormous bronze statue of the Khan on horseback, a colonnade telling the story of the empire, and open grass where Mongolian riders and wrestlers perform. Ceremonies with shamanic dance and offerings of milk and incense are held daily for visitors, and four times a year the Darkhad conduct the full traditional rites, the largest in the spring.
