George Washington's Mount Vernon
Historic House · Mount Vernon, Virginia
Washington's estate on a bluff above the Potomac, the mansion built in 1734 and enlarged by him over forty years into the red-roofed house with the two-storey piazza that everyone can picture. It has been open to the public since 1860, saved and still run by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association — the first national historic preservation organisation in the United States — and it has never taken government money.
