Gero Onsen, A Hot Spring Town On The Hida River In Gifu Counted Among The Three Famous Onsen Of Japan With Arima And Kusatsu, Known For Smooth, Slightly Alkaline Water. A Weekend Trip From Nagoya, With Foot Baths And A Historic Village. · Gero, Gifu

Gero Onsen is a hot spring town on the Hida River in Gifu Prefecture, about an hour and a half from Nagoya on the Hida limited express. It is counted among the three famous onsen of Japan, along with Arima and Kusatsu, both of which have their own rows. The water is slightly alkaline and feels smooth and silky on the skin, with little smell, which makes it a gentle introduction to onsen for first-timers. The town is built around large ryokan and hotels along the river, with free public foot baths in the streets, a bath-tour wooden tag that lets you try three ryokan baths, and a museum village of relocated farmhouses on the hill. It is a tier 3 stop: people from Nagoya and Gifu add it to a weekend, and visitors heading to Takayama or Shirakawa-go, both separate rows, often break the journey here. It is worth the detour for a soak and a night's rest, but it is a modest town, and weekends and holidays can be busy. Ask about tattoo rules before you book.
