Giant Springs State Park

River · Great Falls, Montana

One of the largest freshwater springs in the United States, on the bank of the Missouri at Great Falls, pushing out something in the order of a hundred and fifty million gallons a day at a constant 54 degrees. The water surfaces in a clear blue-green pool and runs a couple of hundred feet into the Missouri as the Roe River, which was for a while listed in Guinness as the shortest river in the world before the category was dropped. Lewis and Clark noted the spring in 1805 while portaging eighteen miles around the falls that gave the city its name.

4600 Giant Springs Road, Great Falls, Montana, 59405, United States

Open daily year round on a Montana state park vehicle fee, generally sunrise to sunset. The visitor centre and the state fish hatchery keep their own seasonal hours and are reduced in winter. The spring runs at a constant 54 degrees and never freezes, so the site is worthwhile in any season. The River's Edge Trail through the park is free and open at all hours.
