A Town Founded In 1875 As The Centre Of New Iceland, The Largest Icelandic Settlement Outside Iceland, With A Viking Statue (1967), A Harbour And Beach On Lake Winnipeg And The Icelandic Festival Of Manitoba Held Each August. Busy On Summer Weekends; Quiet In Winter. Hecla Island Is A Separate Row. · Gimli, Manitoba
Gimli is a small lakeside town on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg, about 75 km north of Winnipeg, and the centre of New Iceland, the largest Icelandic settlement outside Iceland. It was founded in 1875 and keeps that heritage in its museum, its street names and its festival. The Viking statue, put up in 1967, is a roadside photo stop, not a major sight; expect a short pause with a camera. The harbour and the long sandy beach are the real draw in summer, when the town fills on weekends. Lake Winnipeg is huge and cold, and the water can be rough, murky or affected by algae advisories in late summer, so check before swimming. The Icelandic Festival of Manitoba in early August brings big crowds and hard parking. Hecla Island is a separate row. The town suits a day trip from Winnipeg for families, heritage fans and anyone wanting a prairie beach afternoon. Winter is quiet and many things close.
Lakeside town on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg about 75 km north of Winnipeg, with a harbour, a long beach, the Viking statue and the New Iceland Heritage Museum, Gimli, Manitoba, Canada
Gimli itself is an open town with no gate, so the beach, harbour and Viking statue can be visited at any hour of the year. The beach is best used in daylight in summer, from late June to early September. The New Iceland Heritage Museum, shops, cafes and seasonal businesses keep their own hours, which are longer from late spring to early autumn and shorter or closed in winter, so confirm before you drive. Beach services and any lifeguard cover are seasonal and may run only on warm weekends. The Icelandic festival in early August changes parking, roads and crowds, so check dates and plan ahead if you are going then. Water advisories can close or discourage swimming.
