Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park
Subnational Park · Vantage, Washington
A 7,000-acre park above the Columbia at Vantage, protecting one of the most unusual petrified forests anywhere: trees that were buried by Miocene lava flows and mineralised in place, in swampy ground that stopped them burning. More than fifty species have been identified in the stone here, including ginkgo - which is what makes the site notable, since petrified ginkgo is rare almost everywhere else. The park also holds Wanapum petroglyphs moved here when the reservoir behind Wanapum Dam flooded their original site.
4511 Huntzinger Road, Vantage, Washington, 98950, United States
Trails and grounds open year round during daylight hours. THE INTERPRETIVE CENTRE IS SEASONAL and has run limited days even in summer - check before travelling, because it holds the polished specimens and the explanation, and the trail without it is a walk past caged logs. A Discover Pass is required to park.
