Gladys Porter Zoo
Zoo · Brownsville, Texas
Thirty-one acres in the middle of Brownsville holding around 1,600 animals in open-air exhibits that the subtropical Valley climate makes possible, planted so densely that it is a botanical park as much as a zoo. It was planned, built, stocked, equipped and then simply handed to the city as a gift, and it has bred and released Kemp's ridley sea turtles, ocelots and aplomado falcons back into the wild.

⚠ HOURS AND ADMISSION ARE NOT STATED HERE — the listing data I could find dated from 2022 and is too old to rely on. Check gpz.org before travelling. ⚠ PARKING: free lots around the zoo, and a paid lot inside the grounds at about $5. The full circuit is about three-quarters of a mile, which makes it one of the most manageable serious zoos in Texas with small children. Ask at the gate for the keeper talk schedule.
