Glasriket, the Kingdom of Crystal

The Forest District Of Smaland Where Swedish Art Glass Is Blown, Around Kosta (Founded 1742), Orrefors And Boda: Working Hot Shops, Glass Museums And Factory Outlets · Kosta, Kronoberg County

Glasriket, the Kingdom of Crystal, is the forest district of Smaland, between Vaxjo and Kalmar, where most Swedish art glass has been blown for nearly three centuries. It exists because the region had what early glassworks needed: endless wood for the furnaces, sand, water and cheap labour, and Kosta, the oldest works, was founded here in 1742. Orrefors, Boda, Maleras, Pukeberg and others followed, and in the 1900s their designers made Swedish glass famous for engraved crystal and bold art pieces. Visitors come to stand in the hot shop and watch glassblowers gather molten glass from the furnace and shape it by hand, which is usually free, then browse factory outlets, galleries and museums, and sleep at the Kosta Boda Art Hotel, filled with glass art. The honest caveat: many glassworks have closed over the decades, the hot shops that remain keep shorter hours outside summer and may pause production, and without a car the villages are hard to link up - so confirm which works are blowing glass before you plan a day.

The glassworks villages of the Smaland forest between Vaxjo and Kalmar; Kosta, the oldest, sits in Lessebo Municipality, Kosta, Kronoberg County, Sweden

The glassworks, outlets and museums have fuller hours in summer, roughly mid-June to mid-August, when hot shops blow on most weekdays and often weekends. The rest of the year shops and outlets open daily or most days, but glassblowing is mainly on weekdays and can pause for holidays, maintenance or reduced production - check each works before you drive. Hot shops often break for lunch and stop in mid-afternoon, so come in the morning. Many places close or cut hours at Midsummer, Christmas and New Year. Getting there: a car is essential. Kosta is roughly 50 km east of Vaxjo and 80 km west of Kalmar; regional trains between Vaxjo and Kalmar stop at Lessebo, Nybro and Emmaboda, but buses on to the villages are sparse - confirm. Book the Kosta Boda Art Hotel and any hyttsill evening ahead in summer.
