Glen Ellis Falls

Waterfall Of About 64 Feet (Confirm) On The Ellis River In Pinkham Notch In The White Mountain National Forest, Reached By A Short Path And Stone Steps From A Roadside Lot, Passing Under Route 16 (Confirm). · Jackson, New Hampshire

A waterfall of about 64 feet (confirm) on the Ellis River in Pinkham Notch, in the White Mountain National Forest a short drive south of the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. The river drops in a single powerful chute through a notch in the granite, then spreads into a pool and a run of smaller cascades and pools below. From a signed lot on the west side of NH Route 16, a short path of roughly a third of a mile each way (confirm) passes under the highway through a tunnel and then descends a long flight of stone steps with railings to viewing areas beside the falls and the pool at the base. It is one of the easiest big waterfalls to reach in the White Mountains, which makes it a standard stop on any drive through the notch between Jackson and Gorham. The volume is greatest during spring snowmelt and after heavy rain; by late summer the falls are thinner but still impressive. In winter the falls build columns of ice, though the steps can be icy and the lot may not be cleared. A forest recreation pass has been required to park (confirm).

NH Route 16, Pinkham Notch, Jackson, New Hampshire, 03846, United States

Open all year during daylight; there are no gates or set hours on the path, and no staff on site. The main season is from about May to October, when the lot is clear and the steps are dry in good weather. Spring snowmelt from about April to early June brings the biggest flow but also wet, slippery steps and black flies. In winter the lot may not be plowed (confirm) and the steps are often covered in ice and packed snow; go only with traction devices. Any toilet at the lot may close in winter. The Pinkham Notch Visitor Center about a mile north keeps longer seasonal hours and is the nearest indoor shelter.
