Glenorchy and Paradise
A Small Settlement At The Head Of Lake Wakatipu, Half An Hour From Queenstown On One Of The Country'S Most Scenic Lakeside Drives, Gateway To The Routeburn And Greenstone Tracks And The Dart Valley'S Paradise, A Farming Flat So Widely Filmed As Middle Earth Backdrop That The Name Has Stuck Informally · Glenorchy, Otago
Glenorchy is a small settlement at the head of Lake Wakatipu, a 45 minute drive from Queenstown along one of New Zealand's most scenic lakeside roads, beneath the Richardson and Humboldt Mountains. Where Queenstown built itself around bungy jumping and nightlife, Glenorchy stayed small and quiet, working instead as the trailhead town for two Great Walks - the Routeburn Track and the Greenstone and Caples Tracks - plus shorter day walks needing no booking at all. Beyond the village, the flat Dart Valley opens into an area informally known as Paradise, locally famous for how often its beech forest and river flats have stood in for Middle-earth and other fictional landscapes on screen. The glacier-fed Dart River braids across gravel flats below, fast enough for jet boat trips close to the mountains without Queenstown's crowds. Horse trekking operators work the valley flats on gentler ground than the alpine tracks above. Glenorchy itself has one small shop, a pub and a few places to eat - a staging point, not a destination with its own sights, and that is largely the appeal.

Glenorchy village has no gates and is open at all hours; the Dart Valley and Paradise farmland are accessed by public road and are free to drive or walk through at any time, subject to private farm boundaries in places. The village's single shop, pub and cafes keep limited small-town hours, often shorter outside summer, and some close entirely for part of the winter off-season. Jet boat and horse trek operators run on fixed daytime departure times, typically between about 9am and 4pm, and are cancelled rather than delayed when the Dart River is running too high or too fast to run safely. Great Walk huts on the Routeburn and Greenstone-Caples tracks require a Department of Conservation booking in the Great Walks season and operate as basic unbooked shelters outside it.
