Glensheen

Manor · Duluth, Minnesota

A 39-room Jacobean Revival house on twelve acres of Lake Superior shoreline in Duluth, built between 1905 and 1908 for the mining and railroad attorney Chester Congdon and finished to a standard that has barely been altered since. Almost everything in it is original — the furniture, the fittings, the light fixtures, the books — because the family lived there until 1977 and left it to the University of Minnesota. It is also the house where Elisabeth Congdon and her night nurse were murdered in June 1977, a case the estate refused to discuss for decades and now addresses directly.

3300 London Road, Duluth, Minnesota, 55804, United States

Open most of the year on guided house tours, booked online or at the door, with a separate and cheaper grounds-only ticket for the gardens and shoreline. Specialist tours — the service areas, the 1977 murders, and Christmas tours from late November through December — cost more and sell out. Hours are reduced in winter and the grounds may close for ice. Parking on site is free.
