Glenwood Hot Springs Resort

The Largest Hot Springs Pool In The World A Mineral Pool 405 Feet Long, Opened In 1888 And Fed By The Yampah Spring At Around Three And A Half Million Gallons A Day. The Ute Name Yampah Means Big Medicine. · Glenwood Springs, Colorado

The pool at Glenwood Springs is four hundred and five feet long, which makes it the largest hot springs pool in the world and means the far end of it is a swim rather than a wade. It is fed by the Yampah spring, which delivers something like three and a half million gallons a day at 122 degrees and has to be cooled to be usable - the big pool sits around 90 to 93 degrees and the smaller therapy pool at about 104. The Ute called the spring Yampah, big medicine, and used it long before the bathhouse opened in 1888 to serve a silver boom and then a procession of consumptives, presidents and gangsters. Doc Holliday came here in 1887 hoping the vapours would help his tuberculosis, and died in the town within months. Theodore Roosevelt used the Hotel Colorado across the road as a summer White House. The pool has been open ever since, in every weather, and the version most people remember is a winter evening with snow falling into the steam.

Open daily year-round, typically from morning until late evening, with the pool operating in all weather - winter evenings with snow falling on steaming water are the signature experience. The separate Yampah vapour caves and Iron Mountain Hot Springs in the same town are different businesses with their own hours and tickets.
