Glore Psychiatric Museum

Specialty Museum · St. Joseph, Missouri

A museum of the history of psychiatric treatment, built from the collection of George Glore, who spent decades assembling it while working for the Missouri Department of Mental Health, and housed in a building of the state hospital it documents. It shows the instruments and the practices without softening them - the Bath of Surprise, the tranquilizer chair, a giant hamster wheel - alongside patient art and possessions. It is one of the most genuinely unsettling museums in America and it is not for everybody.

3406 Frederick Avenue, St. Joseph, Missouri, 64506, United States

Generally 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesday to Saturday, CLOSED SUNDAYS AND MONDAYS, with reduced winter hours. Closed major holidays. One ticket covers the Glore alongside the St. Joseph Museum, the Black Archives Museum and the American Indian Gallery in the same complex, which is unusually good value.
