Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church National Historic Site
National Historic Site · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The oldest church in Pennsylvania, consecrated in 1700 by Swedish Lutherans who had been on the Delaware since before William Penn arrived, and one of the oldest church buildings still standing anywhere in the United States. It became Episcopal in 1845, it is still a working parish with a congregation, and it is simultaneously a unit of the National Park Service — a combination that exists at only a handful of places in the country. Ship models hang from the ceiling, which is a Swedish custom, and the churchyard holds graves from before the Revolution.
916 South Swanson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19147, United States
FREE. The church is generally open to visitors on weekday afternoons and around Sunday services, with limited and variable hours — it is a working parish staffed largely by volunteers. The churchyard is open more widely during daylight. Verify before travelling.
