Gloss Mountain State Park

Oklahoma State Park; Gypsum Capped Mesas, No Parking Pass Required · Fairview, Oklahoma

A line of flat-topped red mesas rising abruptly from the wheat country of north-western Oklahoma, capped with a layer of gypsum and selenite that glitters in the sun and gave the range its name, sometimes still spelled Glass Mountains. A steel staircase climbs the face of Cathedral Mountain to a mesa-top trail of about 1.2 miles with roughly 170 feet of gain, and from the top the valley floor, Lone Peak Mountain and the wheat fields run out flat in every direction. The gypsum beds were laid down by a Permian sea, and the red mudstone below erodes into gullies and hoodoos. The park is free, with no parking pass required, and has restrooms, picnic tables with grills, pavilions and water, but no camping. Vehicles are allowed in from 7:30 AM to 5 PM, and walkers may stay from sunrise to sunset.
