Gobbler's Knob

Historic Site · Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania

A clearing in the woods two miles outside Punxsutawney where, every 2 February since the 1880s, men in top hats hold up a groundhog and announce whether winter will continue. The 1993 film made it globally famous and turned a local Pennsylvania German custom into something tens of thousands of people attend in the dark and the cold. On the other three hundred and sixty-four days it is a small free park with a stage, a few interpretive signs and a large fibreglass stump that visitors sit on to have their photograph taken.

Woodland Avenue Extension, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, 15767, United States

FREE and open at all times, year round. On ordinary days it is an unstaffed clearing with a stage, a stump and interpretive signs. The Groundhog Day ceremony on 2 February runs from the small hours with shuttle access from Punxsutawney and very large crowds. Phil lives at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library in town, not here.
