Going-to-the-Sun Road
National Historic Landmark · West Glacier, Montana
Fifty miles across Glacier National Park from Lake McDonald to St Mary, climbing over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass on a shelf blasted into the side of the Garden Wall. It was finished in 1932 after eleven years of work, much of it done by men hanging on ropes, and it is a National Historic Landmark as a piece of engineering rather than as scenery. It is also closed by snow for most of the year — the plows need months to clear Logan Pass, and the full road is usually open only from late June or early July until the middle of October.

Seasonal. The full road across Logan Pass is generally open only from late June or early July until mid-October, and the opening date moves by weeks depending on snow — the lower sections along Lake McDonald and St Mary Lake stay open longer. VEHICLES OVER 21 FEET LONG, 8 FEET WIDE OR 10 FEET TALL ARE PROHIBITED between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun. A timed vehicle reservation has been required for this corridor in peak season since 2021 and the rules change annually — check the current year on the park website and book on recreation.gov. A park entrance fee applies separately.
