Golden Bay and Wharariki Beach
A Sunny Bay On The Far Side Of Takaka Hill From Nelson, Reached By A Notoriously Winding Road, With Wharariki Beach'S Wind Sculpted Dunes And Sea Arches At Its Western End, Te Waikoropupu Springs Among The Clearest Freshwater Springs Measured Anywhere, And A Slower Pace Than Neighbouring Abel Tasman · Takaka, Tasman
Golden Bay sits on the far side of Takaka Hill from Nelson, reached by a notoriously winding, narrow road that keeps it feeling genuinely separate from the rest of the Tasman region, including neighbouring Abel Tasman National Park just over the hill to the east. The small township of Takaka is the area's hub, a laid-back base for exploring a coastline of golden sand, farmland and native bush. At its western end, Wharariki Beach is the standout - a wide, wild beach backed by wind-sculpted dunes, with sea stacks, arches and caves scattered along the sand, reached only by a walk across a farm paddock rather than a car park at the shore. Inland, Te Waikoropupu Springs - known locally as Pupu Springs - are among the clearest freshwater springs ever measured anywhere in the world, with visibility so great that the water itself seems almost absent. The whole bay moves at a slower pace than Abel Tasman's beach-hopping Great Walk crowds, favouring a quieter, more remote character of farmland, caves and wide empty sand.

Golden Bay's beaches and springs have no gate and are accessible at any hour of daylight, though the walk to Wharariki Beach is only sensible in daylight given the farm track and dune crossing. Te Waikoropupu Springs' boardwalk is open daily from dawn to dusk with no entry fee. Swimming and sea-cave access at Wharariki are genuinely tide-dependent - the beach itself is walkable at any tide but the sea arches and caves at its western end are only safely reachable around low tide, and the walk-in car park gate at the farm track entrance is typically locked overnight. Cafes and shops in Takaka township keep standard daytime hours, roughly 9am to 5pm, and some close altogether outside the November to April summer season.
