Golden Gate Bridge
Iconic Bridge · San Francisco, California
The Golden Gate Bridge is the 1937 suspension bridge that links San Francisco to Marin County across the mouth of the bay, about 1.7 miles long and painted the rust-red shade called International Orange. It is among the most photographed structures on earth, and the experience is as much about weather as steel: fog pours through the strait, the wind on the span is strong and cold, and the towers often vanish in cloud. You can walk or bike across for free, drive it, or simply look at it from a dozen viewpoints on both shores. Most visitors spend one to three hours, usually walking part of the span from the San Francisco side and adding a viewpoint such as Battery Spencer in Marin or Crissy Field and Fort Point in the Presidio. Parking near the bridge is limited and fills early, so plan transit or a rideshare ahead. Sidewalk hours, tolls and parking rules change, so confirm them before you go.

The roadway is open to vehicles around the clock, apart from rare closures for maintenance, emergencies or events. The pedestrian sidewalk on the east side is open during daytime hours, commonly from early morning until the evening and later in summer, while the west sidewalk is reserved for cyclists at set times. These hours have changed over the years, so confirm the current schedule with the bridge district or the Welcome Center before you plan a sunrise or sunset walk. The Welcome Center and its small shop keep shorter daytime hours of their own, and the parking lots next to it can fill within an hour of opening on clear weekends. Viewpoints on the Marin and San Francisco shores are open longer, though some of them close at dusk.
