National Historical Park · Corinne, Utah

The spot at Promontory Summit where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met on 10 May 1869, completing the first transcontinental railroad and joining the country by rail. Working replicas of the two locomotives that faced each other that day, the Central Pacific's Jupiter and Union Pacific No. 119, are steamed out onto the original grade on a seasonal schedule. It is a remote place — the nearest town is more than twenty miles away — and that emptiness is part of what makes it land.

Promontory Summit, Corinne, Utah, United States

An entrance fee is charged per vehicle, covered by the America the Beautiful pass. The visitor centre, film and exhibits are open year round on published hours. ⚠ THE WORKING REPLICA LOCOMOTIVES, JUPITER AND NO. 119, RUN ON A SEASONAL SCHEDULE ON SET DAYS — outside it they are housed and not visible, and the golden spike ceremony re-enactments follow their own calendar. CHECK nps.gov/gosp BEFORE TRAVELLING, because arriving on a day with no steam is the standard disappointment and this is a remote site. The 10 May anniversary is the largest event of the year. ⚠ THE NEAREST TOWN, CORINNE, IS ABOUT 23 MILES AWAY with no fuel, food or services between — fuel up and bring food and water. The East and West Grade auto tours are unpaved gravel and can be rough or impassable after rain; ask at the visitor centre before taking a low vehicle.
