Golden Spike Tower and Bailey Yard

Observation Tower Over Union Pacific'S Bailey Yard, The World'S Largest Railroad Classification Yard (Guinness World Records Hedge) · North Platte, Nebraska

The Golden Spike Tower is an eight-storey observation tower on the west side of North Platte, opened in 2008 to let the public look down on Union Pacific's Bailey Yard, often described as the largest railroad classification yard in the world and listed as such by Guinness World Records. The yard stretches roughly 8 miles along the Platte valley and covers roughly 2,850 acres, and it sorts freight cars from across the country into new trains, many of them rolled by gravity over two humps, with locomotives serviced and repaired alongside. From the tower's enclosed seventh-floor deck and open-air eighth floor you watch this live: cars rolling off the humps, trains arriving and leaving, and locomotives moving in and out of the shops. Volunteers, often retired railroaders, explain what is happening. The ground floor holds a gift shop and small exhibits. It is a working yard, not a museum, so what you see depends on traffic that day; for most visitors it is a one- to two-hour stop just off I-80.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the tower is open daily through much of the year from roughly 9 am to 5 pm, with longer hours in summer, roughly to 6 or 7 pm, and shorter hours or fewer days in winter; it closes on some major holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. The open-air eighth floor may close in high wind, lightning or bad weather. The yard itself operates around the clock. The traps that ruin a visit are pulling off I-80 at dusk expecting it to be open, arriving from Mountain-time Ogallala an hour later than you think, and expecting a museum when the show is live trains; confirm current times before relying on them.
