Gower Peninsula and Rhossili Bay
Gower Was Designated The First Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty In The UK In 1956. Rhossili Bay Is A 5 Km Sweep Of Sand Under A Long Down; Worm'S Head Is A Tidal Island Reached On Foot Across A Rocky Causeway For A Few Hours Each Side Of Low Tide. · Rhossili, Wales
Gower is a finger of land west of Swansea, in 1956 the first place in the UK named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Rhossili Bay at its western end is the headline: five kilometres of pale sand under a long grassy down, with the rocky spine of Worm's Head running out to sea at the tip. It suits walkers, surfers, families with a spade and anyone who wants a big empty beach without a flight. Give it a day, two if you want the quieter coves at Three Cliffs, Oxwich and Port Eynon. Be honest about the weather: it is Atlantic Wales, so wind, drizzle and sudden cloud are normal even in summer, and the water is cold. Summer weekends fill the Rhossili car park and the lanes, and parking is charged. Worm's Head can only be reached across a rocky causeway for a few hours around low tide, and each year people get cut off and need the coastguard, so check tide times first. It is a place for fresh air and weather, not for a guaranteed beach day.
Peninsula west of Swansea in south Wales with cliffs, coves and surf beaches, Rhossili Bay and the tidal causeway to Worm's Head at its western tip, reached by the A4118 from Swansea, Rhossili, Wales, United Kingdom
The coast, beaches and cliff paths are open at all hours and all year, with no gate or ticket. The practical limits are the tide and the light. Worm's Head is reachable on foot only for roughly two to three hours either side of low water, and the National Trust visitor centre at Rhossili normally displays safe crossing times and flags when the causeway is closed, so read the notice before you set off and do not cross if told not to. Lifeguards patrol Rhossili and some other Gower beaches in the main summer season only, typically late May or early July to September, so outside those dates nobody is watching the surf. The car park, the cafes and the pub near the cliff top keep shorter hours in winter. Confirm tide tables, lifeguard dates and car park charges locally before you go.
