Ottoman Covered Market Begun Under Mehmed II In 1455 61 Around The Inner Bedesten; Roughly 4,000 Shops In 60 Odd Covered Streets · Istanbul, Istanbul

Mehmed II started it within eight years of taking the city, as a stone warehouse for cloth, and five and a half centuries of accretion turned it into something no plan would have produced: sixty-odd covered streets, four thousand shops, twenty-odd gates and a geography that locals navigate by trade rather than by name - the goldsmiths along one spine, the carpet dealers in another quarter, the antique men in the old domed bedesten at the centre, which is the original building and the only part that feels its age. It is one of the oldest covered markets in the world and routinely one of the most visited attractions on earth, and it is also a working commercial district where wholesale gold changes hands behind the tourist frontage. Prices are negotiable, the hard sell is constant, and the honest advice is to treat it as a piece of architecture you happen to be able to buy things in, and to bargain hard in.

Beyazit Mahallesi, Kalpakcilar Caddesi, Fatih, Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkiye

Open Monday to Saturday through the day and CLOSED ON SUNDAYS and on religious holidays, which catches out more visitors than anything else about it. Shops start shutting well before the gates do. The surrounding hans and the streets outside keep their own hours. Ramadan and the days around Kurban Bayram change everything.
