Grand Canyon National Park
National Park · Grand Canyon, Arizona
A canyon carved by the Colorado River through the Colorado Plateau, about 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and more than a mile deep, exposing nearly two billion years of rock. It became a national park in 1919 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Most visitors see it from the South Rim, open all year, with Grand Canyon Village, free shuttle buses and viewpoints such as Mather Point and Desert View. The higher North Rim is a separate, seasonal area; the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed its historic lodge. River trips, mule rides and inner-canyon hikes reach the bottom, where summer heat is deadly.
20 South Entrance Rd, Grand Canyon, Arizona, 86023, United States
South Rim open 24 hours, year-round. North Rim open seasonally (it reopened for day use on 15 May 2026 with no in-park lodging after the 2025 fire). Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from about March to November and served by free shuttles. Check nps.gov/grca.
