Grand Canyon Railway

Historic Railway — Opened 1901, Revived 1989 · Williams, Arizona

A historic railway that carries passengers 65 miles from the Route 66 town of Williams to the 1910 log depot in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim, a two-hour-and-fifteen-minute ride each way through ponderosa forest and open grassland. The line first ran to the canyon in 1901, carried many of the park's early visitors, closed in 1968 and was revived in 1989. Trains leave from the 1908 Williams depot after a wild west shootout show, musicians and characters stroll the cars, and the return run is held up by a staged train robbery. Passengers get about three and a half hours at the rim before the train heads back, and steam locomotives run on selected days.
