Grand Caverns

Show Cave · Grottoes, Virginia

The oldest continuously operating show cave in the United States, opened to paying visitors in 1806 and never closed since. Thomas Jefferson is said to have ridden over to see it, soldiers from both armies toured it during the Valley campaigns, and several hundred of them wrote their names on the walls in candle smoke and pencil — those signatures are still there and are the reason to come rather than the formations.

5 Grand Caverns Drive, Grottoes, Virginia, 24441, United States

Tours depart on a set schedule rather than continuously, generally from 9 AM, with the last departure well before closing. Reduced schedule in winter — check before travelling. Adventure tours booked ahead.
