Grand Haven State Park

Michigan State Park · Grand Haven, Michigan

Grand Haven State Park is a small Lake Michigan beach park on the south side of the Grand River channel, a short walk from downtown Grand Haven, a city that calls itself a Coast Guard City. It is mostly sand: a wide public beach, a campground set right behind it, and a long concrete pier that runs out to the red catwalk and the South Pierhead light. The sunsets over the lake are the main draw, and the town gives you restaurants, shops and a boardwalk without needing the car. It suits families, campers who want to be on the sand, and anyone who likes watching ships and sunsets. It is also crowded on summer weekends, the water is cold into early summer, and the pier and channel currents have drowned swimmers, so treat the red flag rules as real. Allow a half day for the beach and pier, or a night or more if you can win a campsite. Confirm passport and flag details before you go, and read the posted signs on arrival, because rules change by season and by year.

The park is open year-round, with the beach and pier reachable in daylight and posted park hours usually running from early morning to late evening. The campground is the seasonal part: most sites are open from spring into autumn, and the busiest weeks, from July into mid August, are booked far ahead online. Lifeguards, if any, are seasonal and not on duty all day, so never assume one is watching. Winter visits are possible and quiet, with a snowy beach and an icy pier that can be closed or unsafe. Confirm current hours, camping dates and Recreation Passport rules with the Michigan DNR before you drive, especially outside July and August.
