Grand Lake o' the Cherokees
Grand River Dam Authority Reservoir, Impounded 1940 By Pensacola Dam · Grove, Oklahoma
A 46,500-acre reservoir in the far north-east of Oklahoma, made in 1940 when the Pensacola Dam closed the Grand River, and still the state's busiest boating lake, with roughly 1,300 miles of shoreline of coves, docks and marinas. Pensacola Dam itself is the longest multiple-arch dam in the world at about a mile long, and the tailwaters below it draw anglers. Grove and Disney are the main towns, with Honey Creek and Bernice areas of Grand Lake State Park, Har-Ber Village museum, boat rentals, poker runs and fishing tournaments for bass, crappie, catfish and paddlefish. Summer weekends bring heavy boat traffic, and the lake is shared with weekend residents from Tulsa, Joplin and north-west Arkansas. Blue-green algae advisories and water levels are posted seasonally.
