Grand Marais
Old Town · Grand Marais, Minnesota
A harbour town of about 1,300 people on the north shore of Lake Superior, a hundred and ten miles up Highway 61 from Duluth and forty from the Canadian border. It has an improbable density of things for its size: a working harbour with two lighthouses on the breakwater, a long-established art colony, a folk school teaching traditional northern crafts, and a main street of independent shops with no chains to speak of. It is the last real town before the border and the southern gate of the Gunflint Trail into the Boundary Waters.
13 North Broadway, Grand Marais, Minnesota, 55604, United States
The town, harbour, breakwater and Artist's Point are open at all hours and free. Shops and galleries generally run late morning to early evening and reduce their days sharply outside the summer and autumn seasons; restaurants run later. The North House Folk School operates a year-round course schedule. Accommodation books out months ahead for October.
