Grand Mere State Park
Michigan State Park · Stevensville, Michigan
Grand Mere State Park is a day-use park near Stevensville in southwest Michigan, a few miles from the Indiana line. It protects forested dunes, three small lakes tucked in the hollows behind the foredune, and a stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline that is far quieter than the big beaches to the north and south. The park is rugged and lightly developed: trails run through woods and over sandy rises, and the beach is reached on foot, not by a short walk from a parking lot. It suits hikers, birders, dog walkers and anyone who wants Lake Michigan without the crowds of nearby Warren Dunes State Park, which is a separate place with a much bigger beach scene. Chicago is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours away, so summer weekends bring some visitors, but it rarely feels packed. Expect ticks and poison ivy off the path, cold water into June, and a Recreation Passport at the gate. There is no developed campground that I am sure of, so confirm overnight rules and facilities.

State parks in Michigan are normally open daily from morning until late evening, and this day-use park is generally open year-round, with the trails and beach reachable in daylight. Confirm the current posted hours, any winter changes and whether the parking area is plowed in snow. There is no staffed visitor centre that I can promise, so confirm whether a ranger or office is on site. Overnight camping is not something to count on here; confirm with the Michigan DNR before planning a stay, and look to nearby parks if you need a campground. A Recreation Passport is needed for the vehicle, and the beach has no guarantee of lifeguards, so treat it as a swim at your own risk.
