Grand Teton National Park

National Park · Moose, Wyoming

A range of granite peaks rising about 7,000 feet straight out of the sagebrush floor of Jackson Hole with no foothills in between, topped by the 13,775-foot Grand Teton. The park was created in 1929 to protect the mountains and enlarged in 1950 to take in the valley floor, much of it land that John D. Rockefeller Jr. had bought quietly and then donated. It adjoins Yellowstone to the north and the two are routinely visited together, but the character is different: a compact landscape of glacial lakes, moose, bison and one of the best-known climbing mountains in the country, twenty minutes from the town of Jackson.
