The Main City Of The Peace Region, A Service And Cultural Centre With The Grande Prairie Museum, The Muskoseepi Park Trail System, A Gateway To Kakwa And The Rocky Mountain Foothills And A Base For Dinosaur Finds. A Large Northern City And A Useful Stop On The Way To The Alaska Highway · Grande Prairie, Alberta

Grande Prairie is the main city of the Peace Country in north-western Alberta, home to roughly 65,000 people and about 450 km north-west of Edmonton on Highway 43. The Beaver, Cree and Sekani peoples travelled this rolling parkland long before settlers arrived, and the city grew from a trading and homesteading hub in the early 1900s, then boomed with the railway, farming, forestry and oil and gas. Today it is a regional centre for the north, with a university college, a hospital, large stores and a busy airport. The Grande Prairie Museum in Muskoseepi Park holds pioneer buildings and local collections, while the park trails run along Bear Creek for miles. The surrounding country is rich in dinosaur bone beds, and the foothills of the Rockies rise to the west toward Kakwa. Most travellers use the city as a supply stop on the way to the Alaska Highway, but a short stay is well rewarded by the trails, the museum and the open farm country.

The city and its park trails are open all year, and the creek paths, bridges and playgrounds in Muskoseepi Park are free at any hour. The Grande Prairie Museum and its pioneer village keep seasonal hours, often daily from about May to early September and by appointment or on shorter days in winter (confirm by phone). Shops, restaurants and fuel stations keep ordinary city hours, with many open late. Summer daylight lasts until nearly 11 pm in June, which suits long evening walks. Winter days are short and cold, and trails may be packed snow, so check conditions.
