Grandfather Mountain

Subnational Park · Linville, North Carolina

At 5,946 feet the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge - Mount Mitchell, which is higher, stands on the western escarpment - and the mountain is three things at once: a privately held non-profit attraction with a paved road to the top, a North Carolina state park covering the rugged backcountry, and a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve. The Mile High Swinging Bridge, a suspension footbridge across an 80-foot chasm at 5,280 feet, is what almost everybody comes for.

2050 Blowing Rock Highway, Linville, North Carolina, 28646, United States

Open daily year round, generally 9 AM to 5 PM with longer hours in summer and last entry an hour or two before closing. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. TICKETED - this is a non-profit attraction, not a free state park, and the two are different things on the same mountain. ⚠ THE ACCESS ROAD AND THE BRIDGE CLOSE IN HIGH WIND AND ICE, sometimes at short notice; the mountain posts conditions and it is worth checking.
