Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site

National Historic Site · Deer Lodge, Montana

A working cattle ranch at Deer Lodge preserved by the National Park Service as the surviving headquarters of the open-range era — at its height in the 1880s the Kohrs operation ran cattle across ten million acres of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and into Canada. The ranch house, bunkhouse, barns and blacksmith shop stand as they were, with the family's furniture still in the rooms, and the Park Service still runs cattle and horses on the ground. Admission is free, which for a site of this quality is worth stating plainly.

266 Warren Lane, Deer Lodge, Montana, 59722, United States

Open year round and FREE — no entrance fee, no parking charge and no ticket. The grounds and visitor centre are open daily except some major holidays. Guided ranch house tours are free, first-come on the day and capped by group size, and are reduced or suspended in winter. Living history demonstrations run daily from roughly late May to early September and not at all outside that. The hay harvest, cut with historic horse-drawn equipment, happens in midsummer.
