Granville Gulf Reservation

Subnational Park · Granville, Vermont

A narrow wooded gulf on Route 100 between Granville and Warren, held as a state reservation, and the reason to stop is a few hundred yards from where you park: Moss Glen Falls, eighty feet of water dropping to the floor of the gulf where Deer Hollow Brook meets Alder Meadow Brook. It is rated among the top forty waterfalls in New England and it is visible from the road, which means one of the better waterfalls in the region costs a two-minute walk from a lay-by. A railed viewing platform at the base is accessible. There is a second, narrower fall - Little Moss Glen - a few steps along the path.

Vermont Route 100, Granville, Vermont, 05747, United States

FREE and open at all hours - a Vermont state reservation on Route 100 with a free roadside pull-off, no gate, no fee and no season. ⚠ MOSS GLEN FALLS IS A FEW HUNDRED YARDS FROM THE PARKING on a short, largely level path, with a RAILED VIEWING PLATFORM AT THE BASE THAT IS ACCESSIBLE - eighty feet of water rated among the top forty waterfalls in New England, for a two-minute walk. Little Moss Glen Falls is a few steps further along. ⚠ THE PULL-OFF IS SMALL AND FILLS on summer weekends and through October, and it is a LAY-BY DIRECTLY ON ROUTE 100 with fast traffic and lorries - keep children and dogs close getting out of the car. ⚠ IT IS NOT MAINTAINED IN WINTER even though Route 100 itself is ploughed, so the path and platform ice up; the falls are spectacular frozen but it is microspikes and care. ⚠ DO NOT CLIMB THE INFORMAL PATHS BESIDE THE FALLS - steep, eroded, unmaintained and slick with spray. Water rises fast after heavy rain and in snowmelt, and can be thin by late August. No restrooms and no services. ⚠ THERE IS ANOTHER MOSS GLEN FALLS AT STOWE, sixty kilometres north - a different waterfall with the same name.
