Grass Valley
Old Town · Grass Valley, California
A hard-rock mining town rather than a placer one, which made it a Cornish town — miners came from Cornwall for the deep-shaft skills, and their pasties are still sold on Mill Street a century and a half later. It sits beside the Empire Mine, one of the richest gold mines in California, and shares its Victorian downtown with Nevada City four miles north.
