Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex

Archaeological · Moundsville, West Virginia

A conical burial mound about 62 feet high and 240 feet across, raised by the Adena culture in stages over perhaps a century somewhere around 250 to 150 BC — the largest mound of its kind anywhere in the Americas. It was tunnelled into by the landowning family in 1838, who then ran a saloon and a museum on top of it, and it now stands in a small state-run park in the middle of Moundsville with an adjoining museum. Admission is free.

801 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville, West Virginia, 26041, United States
